Walking past basket weavers, willow plantations and windmills

Walking past basket weavers, willow plantations and windmills

Unwind with history in the background

The Scheldt River valley is a natural oasis that meanders along the foot of the Flemish Ardennes. The pollard trees and willow bushes are scattered across the landscape. They are silent witnesses to what was once an active industry in the region. The willow plantations served as a breeding ground for willow twigs, which were used to weave baskets.

Rendezvous in Kruisem, the village of the basket weavers

Kruisem, where you start your 9.5 km hike, was the epicentre of this industry. The most skilled basket weavers – also called ‘wannenlappers’ – lived here. They made and repaired the best baskets. Their reputation as craftsmen was known far beyond the region.

Along the route in the Zingemse Meersen, you will discover beautiful willow plantations. These were designed thematically within the framework of the Leader Landscape Experience project, and show you how extensive this tree species really is. The colours, the inflorescence, the shapes... Numerous variations were used to create a beautiful product. The artisanal craftsmanship originated in the beautiful nature of this unique region.

Zingemse Meersen: so much to discover

If you are walking through the Zingemse Meersen, keep your eyes open and spot a beautifully carved sculpture of an owl in a roadside pollard tree.

See how a fallen pollard tree dies – and after a while bursts into life again as a habitat for birds and small animals. Pollard willows form a stately gateway to the Scheldt River valley.

Willow plantations and windmills

These former willow plantations are now the backdrop to your Slow Down walk. You’ve only just left and the first sight already appears: Meuleken ’t Dalone of the smallest windmills in East Flanders.

Did you know that this mill is still fully operational? The province helped finance the renovation of this monument. And the result is impressive. You can visit the mill after making an appointment with the Provinciaal Molencentrum (Provincial Mill Centre). Or just drop in on European Mill Day in May.

Look, a harrier!

Do not be alarmed if you suddenly hear bird sounds that you have never heard before. The Scheldt River valley is known for its rich fauna, so do not forget your binoculars. Kleinmeers and Grootmeers nature reserves are home to hundreds of bird species - some rarer than others.

A great crested grebe, a hen harrier or a buzzard? You can spot them all here. If you have time, you can take a seat in the bird-watching hut at the Weiput. It gives you an unobstructed view of the surroundings – offered by the Agency for Nature & Forests.

Wannenlappers, wanna what?

Are you curious to know how the Wannenlappers route got its name? Well, the large oval baskets used to separate the wheat from the chaff in bygone days were called ‘wannen’ (or winnowing fans in English).

They were made from flexible willow twigs picked from the banks of the Scheldt River. The craftsmen who made and repaired the ‘wannen’ were called ‘wannenlappers’.

In need of a beverage after the walk?

Have the peaceful vistas, fertile landscapes and whimsical willows made you thirsty? Then stop at Café ‘t Sportpaleis in Zingem on the Kerkplein. They serve delicious drinks, including some regional specialities. This café is bustling. Shows are organised here at the drop of a hat.

Is it time to unwind after that intensive walk? Then book a room in Op ‘t Roth holiday home. It is a beautiful holiday home where you can enjoy a good night’s sleep and end your Slow Down day perfectly.
