Walking past Gavers and Nuchten

Geraardsbergen remains a jewel in the crown of the Flemish Ardennes. Not only because of its famous wall or mattentaart pastries but also because of the beautiful Provincial Domain De Gavers and De Nuchten nature reserve.

This is a nice area for a walk that’s also ideal for a trip with children. Is your child still a baby? Then it’s good to know that the first part of this walking route is fully paved. This makes it ideal for unwinding in nature with your buggy!

Put on your walking shoes

Maybe we already spilt the beans a little, but you can cut this beautiful 14 km walk in two. Would you prefer to complete the paved part or only to discover De Nuchten nature reserve? The choice is up to you.

Immerse yourself in the most beautiful landscapes that Flanders has to offer. Reason enough to put on your walking shoes and speed off towards Geraardsbergen.

Never a dull moment in De Gavers

The first stop is Provincial Domain De Gavers. A vast domain, perfectly maintained by the province and freely accessible to all. You can easily spend every free day here with your kids. Bad weather? Then dive into Het Gaversbad swimming pool together. Tip: parents can withdraw to the wellness area if their kids are not so little anymore. Not a swimmer? Don’t worry! You can also have a go at laser shooting. Fun guaranteed for the whole family!

If the sun is shining, you can jump into the swimming pond or relax on the beach. The playground challenges both younger and older children. And when they’re tired of that, you drag them towards the go-karts, mini-bikes, trampolines and scooters.

Sports are also a key activity here. Go for a bike ride together, play miniature golf or complete the beautiful Past Gavers and Nuchten walking route from start to finish.

On the move again, towards De Nuchten

The first loop of this strenuous hike takes you along the most beautiful spots of the Provincial Domain. The second part steers you along the Dender River to one of the most beautiful nature reserves in the region: De Nuchten – between Zandbergen and Idegem.

De Nuchten is a lush area where you can discover a real swamp forest! Typical bird species such as the kingfisher and great bittern live here. The really swampy areas are equipped with a corduroy path so you can explore them more comfortably. But please note that this section is not suitable for buggies or wheelchairs.

Once you have traversed the entire reserve, you will end up at the Dender River again, which takes you back to De Gavers. Before heading back, stop by Taverne Loeist for a refreshing drink.

Stick around for a while

Has the trip worn you out? You can spend the night at the Provincial Domain. There is a campsite with all the necessary facilities, as well as bungalows and a youth hostel. Your evening meal awaits you in Restoga, the restaurant on the domain. It’s a great place to unwind with a nice beverage and a delicious snack.
