The Flemish Ardennes Challenge

The Flemish Ardennes Challenge

Show what you’re made of for 22.6 km

Of course, you will not be intimidated when you plan a hike. You don’t just walk; you go for it. Therefore, you choose a walking route that provides you with the necessary challenge. One like the Flemish Ardennes Challenge, for example.

Give it your all for 22.6 km. Walk briskly and become acquainted with D’Hoppe, a special little fountain, Muziek Forest, the Geuzentoren, and hotels, restaurants and cafés where you want to linger. Ready, set, go!

Starting point: La Houppe/D'Hoppe

The picturesque village of D’Hoppe/La Houppe is on the northern, wooded flank of the Pottelberg. In the past, people from far and wide used to get down and dirty in the numerous dance halls. Today, things are a bit quieter, with cosy cafés and restaurants where you can refuel before and after the walk.

Have you already begun the hike? Then quench your thirst on the footpath between junctions 9 and 7. No, not in a dark pub, but by a charming little fountain. Under the Latin inscription ‘Aqua fons vitae’ – which means ‘Water is the source of life’ – you see a face in bas-relief. Go ahead, the water is wonderfully refreshing.

Hercule Poirot and a witch

The Flemish Ardennes Challenge goes straight through Ellezelles. That may not ring a bell, but this village is the fictional birthplace of the world-famous detective Hercule Poirot. Real quiz buffs may also know that this is where the witch Quintine was burned at the stake around 1610. If you didn’t know that, you do now!

When you walk through the centre of the village, you’ll notice how lively it is. The hospitality of the local café owners is legendary. It’s also easy to find good restaurants here.

Music in the forest and a special tower

Next stop: the 100 ha Muziek Forest. which is on the Muziekberg. This witness hill is perhaps the best known of the entire Flemish Ardennes. The beautiful forest is at its best in every season, but the bluebells that bloom here in April and May add an enchanting touch.

Ready for some mystery? The Geuzentoren, found between junctions 58 and 35, is a remarkable structure. It looks like something out of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales and provides the perfect backdrop for a break. Here you’ll find the Sinnenbank and some picnic benches, perfect for a quick lunch!

When you are underway again, be sure to stop in Schorisse (near junction 39). The chapels of the Seven Woes, which you see here, are a listed place of pilgrimage. They’re also a feast for the eye.

Time for a break!

Walking, walking, walking: that’s all well and good, but one needs a bit of fuel from time to time to keep the engine humming! Luckily, you’ll also find a fine range of hotels, restaurants and cafés along the way.

You can step into Brasserie Quintine or Au Chaudron des Légendes in Ellezelles, for example. The regional products are magnificent. Especially if you drink a Quintine or Hercule with them. These beers are brewed in Brasserie Quintine and simply must be sampled.

When you arrive in or depart from La Houppe/D’Hoppe, you’ll find a host of eateries and cafés where you can enjoy tasty snacks, refreshing beverages and delicious local dishes. Tip: pour yourself a Quintine! This regional beer is the most popular beer in the region!

Taking a nap afterwards is not a problem

Do you want to turn your hike into a weekend trip? In that case, you can book a room in one of the many B&Bs in the Flemish Ardennes.

Large groups can also spend the night in De Ijsmolenhoeve. Ideal for youth groups and groups of friends who organise activities here in the region.
