Livinus Chapel

Sint-Lievenskapel or Livinus Chapel

The date above the door frame of this is brick chapel is 1680. It has a renovated interior with a striking neo-Gothic altar. The chapel was erected in honour of Livinus of Ghent, an Irish-born bishop who was active as an apostle in Flanders and Brabant and was canonised.

Despite the fact that the story of his life reads like an intriguing novel, recent research suggests that he may never have lived at all. Do not let that get you down; the chapel is glorious!

Grotto in Cotthem

St Anne’s Chapel and Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto

Technically, you would not walk past St Anne’s Chapel, but that small detour along the Wittinck is well worth it. The Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto in Cotthem is also worth a visit.

It is in a bend of the road and probably dates from 1954. It is a relatively large artificial cave on two levels, with a large chaplet and kneeling benches on the lower level. You will see statues of St Bernadette and Our Lady of Lourdes above the cave.
