Between hill and chapel walking route

Between hill and chapel walking route

A walking route for real hikers

A hike that starts and ends in Kerselare, that should be a piece of cake, right? Well, no.

This strenuous walking route is demanding. You'll go up and down the rolling hills of the Flemish Ardennes for 13 km. You’ll enjoy the views and traverse beautiful nature - but your calves will suffer, we won’t lie about that. But that won’t stop you, will it?

In the footsteps of Adriaen Brouwer

This whole walking route is based on the work and life of one man: Adriaen Brouwer. And for those of you who haven’t heard of him, we’re happy to tell you more.

Adriaen Brouwer was a Flemish painter in the 17th century. His baroque paintings are in great demand among international art lovers. His most successful years were spent in Antwerp, but he was born in Oudenaarde. His work had a strong influence on renowned artists such as David Teniers, and his work was collected and studied by Rubens and Rembrandt. In other words, very important artists.

The beautiful region around Edelare and Volkegem

It’s a hive of activity at ‘Keerseloare kapelle’, a pilgrimage site on top of the Edelareberg between Oudenaarde and Mater, especially in May. A statue of Mary hanging in a cherry tree there many centuries ago is said to have miraculously cured the daughter of a local baron.

Where a small chapel was later built, a modern concrete church now stands. Devout believers make a short or long pilgrimage past the chapels here. They also go to the square to buy ‘lekkies’: pilgrimage sweets from the traditional confectioner Jan van Gent.

The mapped out walking route then takes you to Volkegem.

Cheers, to life and the arts

Make time for a stop during your walk. It’s the ideal moment to sample the delicious beers of the nearby Roman brewery. Will you choose the original, refreshing Adriaen Brouwer, the powerful Adriaen Brouwer Tripel or the Adriaen Brouwer Oaked, an organic beer with distant notes of wood?

Café Den Obus is a village café full of character where the true Flemish Ardennes still reside in every detail. Everything here reminds one of the good old days – even the friendly owners who serve their customers with warm hospitality.
