5 lodgings in historic buildings
Dreaming away on a beautiful heritage site
Chances are you’ll let out a sigh at an unguarded moment during your stay in the Flemish Ardennes. It really feels like time has stood still here. We would like to increase this chance a little by suggesting six accommodations in historic buildings. But historic does not mean decrepit. The venerable, old buildings have been restored, refurbished and equipped in such a way that you do not have to deprive yourself of any modern comforts. The owners will gladly point out the buildings’ illustrious history.
1. B&B ‘t Huys van Enaeme
The three cosy rooms in historic ‘t Huys van Enaeme radiate a warm, rural atmosphere. They are decorated with authentic furniture from England and France. The atmosphere underground is truly unique. The vaulted cellar contains an event room propped up by bluestone columns. The house has been surfing on Ename’s rich history since the 19th century.
2. Holiday accommodation Kloosterstraat 40
At this address in Zottegem, you can still join a group, though no longer as a Dominican Sister. The convent building with a primary school, orphanage and boarding school from the beginning of the 20th century was converted into a training and seminar centre. K40 offers accommodation in 30 single and double rooms and three family rooms. There are special facilities for wheelchair users.
3. Domain Leeuwergem holiday home
You don’t have to have blue blood running through your veins to stay in a Louis XV-style castle. One of the buildings on the grounds of Leeuwergem Castle was converted into a four-star guesthouse with three bedrooms. Follow in the footsteps of Pieter Emmanuel Joseph d’Hane and get dressed for a walk in the rococo garden with a theatre.
4. B&B Cimbarsaca
Contrary to what the name of the B&B suggests, the refined bourgeois residence in the heart of Semmerzake does not date from the Carolingian period. It was built in 1876 and served as the mayor’s residence for decades. Now, the daughter of the former mayor will welcome you for a stay in one of the four stylish rooms.
5. Hof ter Heidje holiday home
Whether life in this square farmhouse was also rated with five stars in the 18th century is uncertain, but everything confirms that fantastic score today. The owners have restored the impressive building right down to the last detail. Eight double rooms await families, friends, associations and companies looking for modern comfort.
